In terms of its cricketing heritage, Eston can boast many fine cricketers from the past, most notably Ian Smith (born 1925) a leg-spin bowler who played for Natal and represented South Africa at Test level against Lindsay Haslett’s visiting Australian team in 1949. It wasn't until in the early 1950s that sugar cane became the mainstay of the region’s agricultural base. Interestingly, early settlers to the region grew and cultivated Australian wattle trees as the area's first commercial crop the bark and oil extracts being used for tanning leather, with other parts of the tree being used for making traditional Zulu houses and rough furniture. The area has a rich rural and cricketing history dating back to the early 1900s. Our third match against the Willows Cricket Club took us to the Eston region, about 90 km west of Durban.
